Yazılıkaya Open Air Temple

The most impressive sacred site of Hattusha is Yazılıkaya Open-Air Temple, which is located outside the city and is hidden among high cliffs. Especially in this open-air temple used for the New Year celebrations in spring, important gods and goddesses of the country were carved into the rock in order. Yazılıkaya, which can be visited in two sections, A and B rooms, reflects the rock depictions and the Hittite pantheon.

In the reliefs of the twelve underground gods, which are the first figures of Chamber A, the main issue in the back wall is the encounter between God and the Goddess Hepat. The figure of the God of the Air is on the two mountain gods and there is a big bun in his hand. Behind the air of God is probably God Kumarbi with the air god of Hatti. The Sun Goddess Hepat is seen with its pleated long gown and high cap. The goddess stands on a wild cat that has stepped on four mountain masses.

At the end of the goddess figures, the biggest figure of this open-air temple opposite the main stage is IV. There is Tuthaliya. Room B is a narrow room with a length of 18 m. The entrance is provided by a narrow passage. Two demon reliefs with winged and lion heads on both sides of the entrance are depicted with their hands as if to protect the entrance. Twelve underground god reliefs can also be seen in Room B. In the wall opposite these reliefs of God, the figure of God Sharumma, IV. There is a scene of guiding by Tuthaliya.
