Pessinus Ancient City

Ancient City of Pessinus; It is located on Ballıhisar, 13 km south of Sivrihisar on the Ankara-Eskişehir highway. Ballıhisar village was founded on the ancient city which is on the Old King Road. It is known as one of the most important place of worship where the goddess Kybele is called the Phrygians.

The black stone, probably a meteor, was the place where the goddess idol came down from the sky. In order to win the battle against Carthage, the Romans took this stone to Rome in 204 BC and called it Magna Mater.

Pessinus became the scene of the ceremonies for the mother goddess and became the center of those who devoted herself to the mother goddess. The King’s Road from Pessinus is a reliable and shortcut, and is also used in the Roman and Byzantine periods. Remnants of road near the ancient city can also be seen today. Milestones are used on the roads leading to Pessinus during the Roman period.
